Shot Correction Chart

Tap the spot on the target where your group or your fliers sit. Below you get the causes coaches check first for that spot, and one drill for each. Pick rifle or pistol first, and whether you shoot right- or left-handed.

Or a pattern without a direction

Tap a spot on the target.

These are the classic rules of thumb, not a diagnosis. Whether your pattern is a pattern at all is what the "Where do the fliers go?" card in Ring Reader tells you. It reports a direction only once it is above chance.

Where the mapping comes from

The shot correction chart is an old coaching tool. It assigns to each direction the errors that typically send a right-handed shooter's shot there: a jerked trigger pulls the pistol low left, a pushing heel of the hand sends it high. For left-handed shooters the picture is mirrored. Standing rifle adds breathing, hold time and position, so it has its own list.

The list replaces no coach, and it says nothing about a sight that is set wrong. If the whole group is tight and merely sits off center, that is usually the sight. If it scatters in one direction, that is usually technique. How to tell the two apart is in the post below.
